Earlier this week we were asked to service an HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop that was taking over five minutes to boot. We determined that a hardware service was causing the delay, and resolved the issue. Just as we were about to declare the case closed, we made sure to apply the latest Windows Updates before returning the computer. Windows Update offered some updates, and we applied them. After rebooting, we checked for updates again, and were told there were none. However, the system seemed to be still running Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) according to the computer properties page. So we tried to install Vista SP2 manually, except that when we tried, the installer would quickly fail and provide error code 0x80041010. Searching for this error code and Vista SP2 installs did not turn up much, so we created this page to share what we found.

In this case, the error was caused by a corrupted Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) repository. To verify that this is the reason Vista SP2 will not install, launch a command prompt as Administrator and run:

    winmgmt /verifyrepository

If the program returns the message “The repository is inconsistent,” you can attempt to salvage the repository with this command (also run as Administrator):

    winmgmt /salvagerepository

In this case, running winmgmt with the salvage repository switch resolved the issue, and the Vista SP2 installer was then able to continue and successfully upgrade the operating system.

If you are affected by this issue, and can’t seem to resolve it with the steps here, call NYISI for a consultation!

It’s no wonder so many people call NYISI for tune-ups when their computers don’t seem to perform like they used to. Software bundling has escalated to the point that even some new computers today come bogged down by unnecessary software right out of the box, straight from the manufacturer. But even just installing a seemingly innocent program like iTunes can cause computer performance to drop considerably, and the reason for this is software bundling – the practice of packaging multiple computer programs in a single install file.
